Welcome to the next chapter of the library.

At the Racine Public Library’s June 2021 board meeting (PDF), the board approved a renovation of the library’s second floor. The renovation is currently expected to cost $2.7 million.

The board knew that as long as Racine grew and changed, the library must follow. Our building has of course served us well, but we need a refresh to meet our community’s current needs. The library of the 2020s, in essence, must offer new technology and human services as well as be easier and more fun to use. This refresh will better help you find resources, attend events, get support, study, discover, relax and collaborate.

To this end, the library worked with the architects at Product Architecture + Design on a plan to bring us to our next chapter. Construction will begin in April 2022 and then continue in phases through early 2023. We’ll be open the whole time, and our construction team — Rasch Construction & Engineering — will help us keep the space as comfortable as possible during our changes.

What does the library look like right now?

Changes so far

The Beyond Books boutique is now available for browsing. Stop by to see our collection of board games, tools, equipment and other items for you to borrow. You can find the Beyond Books Collection beside the second-floor bathrooms.

The library’s new entrance along Lake Avenue is now open. Our new doorway leads immediately to the renovated second floor, which includes TeenScene, the Innovation Lab and public computers, and our adult collections.

TeenScene, the renovated teen area, is now open for programs as well as its open hours: Tuesdays through Thursdays, 3-7 p.m. You can find the young adult reads in the nook between TeenScene and the new Lake Avenue entrance.

The renovated Innovation Lab is now open for programs. The Business Center and Community Room are open for booking for programs, community events and more.

The new staircase is complete and open for use. The first-floor bathrooms are open again. The old staircase is closed for use except in case of emergencies.

Public computers are in their new home just outside the new Innovation Lab, across from the Lake Avenue entrance. The print station is set up outside the History Room. Nonfiction is in its final home on the downtown-facing side of the building. Travel titles are also in their final home on the downtown side of the second-floor bathrooms.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text – What to Expect 2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The updated History Room (next to the Innovation Lab and Teen Space) is receiving the finishing touches.

The second-floor voting station is unavailable until the new carpet is in place. First-floor print stations have been moved over a room to youth services.

If you need help finding anything, you’ll find our staff at the large desk just up the staircase and at the desk by the Lake Avenue entrance.

Early 2023

Our renovation is projected to be complete by the end of February after all final materials arrive.

Throughout the renovation

Shelves and items will be moving to new places throughout the renovation. Please let a staff member know if you need help finding anything.
