Purpose of Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Interlibrary loan service gives you access to materials which are NOT owned by libraries participating in the SHARE consortium. At your request, we will borrow materials from other libraries. You may also obtain photocopies of non-circulating materials through interlibrary loan.

The conditions of interlibrary loan service are set by the National Interlibrary Loan Code adopted by the American Library Association in 1980, and by local reciprocal borrowing agreements and the regulations of individual lending libraries.

Who May Use Interlibrary Loan
Any resident of Racine, Walworth or Kenosha Counties may borrow materials on interlibrary loan through the Racine Public Library. However, materials requested through the Racine Public Library must be picked up and returned at the Racine Public Library or at the Racine Mobile Library. You must have a valid SHARE borrower’s card, and not have fines of $5 or more.

Patrons living west of I-94 or in Kenosha may find it more convenient to use the interlibrary loan service available at the other public libraries located throughout Racine and Walworth Counties, or the Kenosha Public Library.

Submitting ILL Requests
Submit requests for interlibrary loan at the Reference Desk in person or by telephone. You can also submit requests using the online request forms. You can only request 6 items per day over the phone or in person. You can email us limited book/serial requestions through our online forms or through email. ( You can only request 6 AV (DVD, VHS, CD, AC) through ILL per day. We need your name, address, telephone number, and library card barcode number. Turn-around Time
Plan ahead before requesting materials. Delivery time for interlibrary loan depends upon the number of libraries that own the item, their distance from Racine, and whether the item is available when the request is received. Although your request might be filled within two weeks, it can take four weeks or longer to search, process, and obtain an item. Requests for popular books may take more than two months to fill. Please tell us if the material will no longer be of use to you after a certain date.

There is no charge for interlibrary loan service

Materials Available
You may borrow books, sheet music, audiovisual materials, and some materials reproduced in microform, such as newspapers and census records. In addition, you may request photocopies of non-circulating materials and periodical articles, in accordance with the copyright law. You may also place a request for an item that is missing or otherwise unavailable from the collections in the SHARE catalog.

Materials Not Available
Normally, you CANNOT request the following types of materials: items owned by and in circulation at a SHARE library (NOTE:you can place a hold in the SHARE catalog forthese items); entire issues of periodicals; newspapers; bulky or fragile items; reference books; genealogical materials; and rare or valuable items such as manuscripts. We do not borrow materials that are required reading for college courses.

When the materials arrive, we will notify you by mail, or by email if you give us your email address when you submit the request.

Loan Period
The lending library determines the loan period, which is usually two weeks for books and 1 week for VHS and DVD. Videotapes and DVDs cannot be renewed. Libraries will not renew Interlibrary Loan items unless there are extenuating circumstances, and the request to renew is made at least one week before the original due date.

Returning Materials
Return all materials borrowed through interlibrary loan to the Racine Public Library, or to the Mobile Library. Do not return any item you borrowed through the Racine Public Library’s Interlibrary Loan service to any other library. Please leave the barcode and any paperwork in/attached to the item(s).

When the library is closed, you may return Interlibrary Loan print materials to any book return box. You may return audiovisual materials to the return box, located at the entrance to the library, which has been designated for the return of videos, compact discs, and cassettes.

Please return your materials on time, we don’t like to charge fines!

We charge the same fines for interlibrary loan materials as we do for items owned by the Racine Public Library. Please return interlibrary loan materials promptly. Late return jeopardizes Racine Public Library’s ability to borrow from other libraries in the future.

Lost Materials
If you lose an item, you may be charged $60 or more. Even if a lost item is found and returned, some libraries will not give refunds.
