How Do I Obtain Materials That Are Checked Out? (Holds)

Why You Should Place Holds
If all copies of the material you want are in circulation, we recommend that you place a “hold.” This will prevent renewals on the item until your hold has been filled. When a copy is available, we will hold it for you, and notify you that it is available.

You may also place a hold if Racine’s copies are unavailable, but a copy is available at another SHARE library. The material will be delivered to the Racine Public Library, and you will be notified when it has arrived.

How To Place A Hold
Use one of the Public Access Computers (PAC) when you are in the library. You will need your library barcode and PIN.

Use the Library’s web-based catalog if you are not in the library. You will need your library barcode and PIN. Access instructions, access the catalog.

Talk to a staff member at the circulation desk (636-9241), the Adult Services Department reference desk (636-9217) or the Youth Services Department reference desk (636-9245). You will need your library barcode.

How We Will Contact You When Your Hold Items Are Available
The fastest way is via email. If you have an email account that you check regularly, you should add your email address to your patron account. Access instructions on adding your email address to your patron account, and a link to the catalog. You will need your library barcode and PIN to do this.

Telephone notification is the next fastest way to be notified. We need your current phone number, including area code, for telephone notification to work. If you are not sure that the telephone number in your patron record includes the area code and is up-to-date, please contact the circulation desk at 636-9241 to check. Or, you may use the change of address form in the catalog. Access instructions on changing your address. (Scroll down to the “phone” box. Enter your complete, 10-digit phone number, and click on the “send” button.) You will need your library barcode and PIN.

If you do not have email or a working phone, we will notify you by U.S. mail. Please be sure that we have your correct mailing address by calling the Circulation Desk at 636-9241. You will need your library barcode.
